Although mental health prescribing is a specific, recognised discipline, patients often have a number of concurrent conditions. Medical specialists are experts in their field but they may not be as familiar with medicines and therapies outside of their area of expertise that may affect the health of the patient.
Rather than limit the content of prescribing systems within mental health to mental health drugs, system suppliers prefer to integrate the Multilex Drug Data File (Multilex DDF) in order to provide healthcare professionals in this setting with a comprehensive drug knowledge base. This encourages a holistic view of the patient and ensures that clinicians are provided with the active clinical decision support they need when any of the drugs they prescribe interact with another of the patient’s current medications or may be unsuitable in a particular condition.
Brand prescribing is often more common in mental health prescribing than in some other settings as greater patient compliance may be achieved if medicines look familiar. Multilex DDF offers full support for prescribing by brand.
Patients with concurrent conditions circulate through other healthcare settings so using Multilex DDF, which is used across the healthcare sector, ensures consistency and continuity of care.
To read more about how Multilex DDF is being used within mental health, please refer to the case study links in the Related Documents section of this page.
