First DataBank demonstrate capability of Multilex Dose

7 November 2011

First DataBank, the UK’s leading provider of drug knowledge bases and clinical decision support, will be displaying the latest information around their new prescribing support module - Multilex Dose, at the EHi Live Event, NEC Birmingham.clinically validated, pre-defined doses; and the facility to create user defined doses and dose checking functionality - reducing the likelihood of clinicians selecting or creating inappropriate doses and speeding up the prescribing process.

When Multilex Dose is made available within a clinical system and linked with a patient’s medical record it becomes a seamless part of a clinician’s prescribing workflow.  Rather than building a dose manually, clinicians are initially presented with suitable, user friendly, text based doses to choose from, giving the user confidence and saving them time. Use of pre-defined doses reduces reliance upon memory, the inconvenience of interrupting the workflow to access multiple reference sources or a calculator, and the well-documented risks associated with manual entry of numerical dosage values and units.

Clinicians are able to modify these pre-defined doses or define new doses if necessary – any user-defined or altered doses are then safety checked to ensure safe and effective upper and lower dose limits are not exceeded.

Dr Neill Jones, Clinical Director with First DataBank said, "Dose entry in existing electronic systems is perceived to be time consuming while dose calculation and text entry have been proven to increase the likelihood of introducing error. Coupled with the dose adjustments necessary for a patient’s age or weight and the specific dosing requirement for the indication being treated, clinicians are continually faced with potentially hazardous decision making. Between October 2009 and September 2010, 126,845 medication related incidents were reported to the National Patient Safety Agency – approximately 27% were dose related. Traditional dosing decision support has relied on a retrospective check of the data entered. Multilex Dose aims to provide safer prescribing through pro-active, tailored guidance."

First DataBank will be presenting the latest demonstration of Multilex Dose functionality, including its dose range checks and contraindication information for the prescriber. The intuitive product provides clinicians with critical information which will help in the care pathway for a patient.
