First DataBank partners with unique medication management provider

18 November 2009

Protomed, the world’s first provider of a total medication management platform catering for both liquid and solid medications, has signed an agreement with drug knowledge base and clinical decision support provider First DataBank (FDB).

Protomed and FDB have signed a contract in which FDB will provide its Multilex Drug Data File (Multilex DDF) to enable safer and easier identification of medications within Protomed’s Biodose™ Total Medication Management System (ToMM®).

Biodose™ is a monitored dosage system which is designed for use by hospitals, care homes, PCTs and in domiciliary care. Patient details such as name and date of birth are stored on the product’s software, along with a list of the patient’s current medication which is compiled using Multilex DDF. The patient’s information and medication details are then displayed on unique medication storage pods and backed up by medication administration records showing images of the drugs.

The consistent format in which Multilex DDF displays the medication names makes it easier for healthcare professionals to identify which medication is stored in the pod. This makes the process potentially safer by reducing the risk of selecting the wrong medication.

Norman Niven, CEO of Protomed commented “The use of the Multilex Drug Data File gives us the most up to date and complete drug data, which in conjunction with the Biodose system enables the Pharmacy to provide the best service to its customers.”

Darren Nichols, Managing Director, FDB, comments “Biodose is an innovative development in medication management which demonstrates an interesting use of the Multilex Drug Data File. We hope to see this use evolve as Protomed continues to add to its product portfolio.”
